Money lessons from Christmas

The holiday season is right around the corner, and that means it’s the perfect time to reflect on your financial year and make sure you start 2020 with healthy financial goals. 💪

Thankfully, Christmas can teach us a few crucial money lessons that will carry forward into the new year. 🔝

Always have a plan

The more you plan, the more prepared you are. 😉

It’s easy to get lured into the appeal of Christmas shopping with year-end sales happening but you can always put together a list to set your intentions about Christmas shopping. 🎄

If you haven’t bought your gifts or made any travel plans yet, ask yourself a few key questions:

  • Would you rather spend money on one big gift or several smaller but meaningful ones?

  • Are there gifts you can make with a touch of personalization or do you have to buy everything?

  • Would you rather travel far for a few days, or near for a longer time?

Once you’ve made your decision, set some limits based on the current state of your finances. Work out a plan on how much you’re willing to spend without breaking your savings or your emergency fund. These are NOT supposed to support impulse buying 💸🙅‍♀️

Evaluate your behaviors towards money

Earlier this year, we talked about having healthy money mindsets. Knowing that you’re secured financially gives you peace of mind to focus on the present and live your best life.

But to get there, the first step is to assess your financial health and ask yourself: “How am I doing, financially?” 🤔

If you haven’t yet, think of implementing these steps:

  • Track your expenses to understand how you’re spending your money.

  • Once you know how much you spend in a month, organize your expenses into a workable budget.

  • List down your long-term goals and make sure your short-term decisions don’t take anything away from your focus.

  • Set up automated transfers and savings to reduce the temptation to spend.

Setting up these simple systems can help you get better at money without sacrificing your time. Ultimately, it’ll give you peace of mind and help you enjoy your holidays even more 🏝
